Majority of Brits want to generate their own electricity – but can’t use it when they need it

New research has revealed that households use the most electricity between 5pm and 9pm and 9pm-midnight, when solar generation is falling or has stopped.

However, just 4% of consumers are currently storing electricity for later use.

The research, commissioned by Anker SOLIX, also found that more than 60% of Brits want to generate their own electricity to help take control over soaring household bills, yet many miss out since they can’t store the power for when they need it.

More than four in 10 consumers aren’t aware that without a home battery, electricity generated by solar panels during the day can’t be used when they most need it.

Aaron James Darvill, Strategic Sales Director at Anker SOLIX, said: “With 82% of UK adults saying that electricity bills are a significant part of their monthly budget, it’s no surprise that households are keen to generate their own electricity.

“But moving to solar power alone won’t generate the savings that households need following Ofgem’s 4% price-cap rise and future increases. For most households, electricity usage peaks in the evenings, whether that’s cooking, putting on lights or watching TV.”

With the clocks going back on 25th October, more of Britain’s peak electricity use will take place after dark, meaning households without battery storage will need to draw electricity from the grid even if they generated surplus solar power earlier in the day.
